Maryland Solar Incentives You Can Use
Maryland is one of the more solar-friendly states in the U.S., offering several state and federal incentives that can lower the cost of going solar and improve your long-term return.
Federal Tax Credit
Homeowners and businesses in Maryland can claim the Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which currently allows you to deduct 30% of the cost of your solar system from your federal taxes for systems installed through 2032. This applies to the cost of equipment and installation ~ including panels, inverters, labor, permitting, and more.
Maryland Solar Access Program (MSAP)
The Maryland Solar Access Program (MSAP) is a state grant that helps eligible residents go solar with direct financial support. The program offers grants of up to $750 per kilowatt of installed solar capacity (up to about $7,500 total) for income-qualified homeowners. Awards are made on a first-come, first-served basis and require working with an approved installer.
Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs)
Maryland participates in an active SREC market, where solar system owners earn one SREC for every 1,000 kilowatt-hours (1 megawatt-hour) of solar electricity produced. These credits can be sold for additional income on top of your utility bill savings.
Sales and Property Tax Exemptions
• Sales Tax Exemption: Maryland exempts solar equipment from the state’s 6% sales tax, so you pay less upfront for your system.
• Property Tax Exemption: Solar panels generally do not increase your property tax bill, even though they add value to your home.
Net Metering
Maryland utilities offer net metering, which lets you get credits on your electricity bill for excess solar energy your system sends back to the grid. These credits can lower your electric costs over time.
How These Incentives Work Together
When you combine the 30% federal tax credit, state rebates or grants, net metering bill credits, and ongoing SREC earnings, solar becomes not just an energy solution ~ but a long-term financial asset with measurable return on investment.
